New treatment for allergies

PostHeaderIcon Have you heard the news on allergies?

I was just reading an article in Parents magazine and I wanted to share it with you parents in case you all haven’t heard this yet I will type it word for word (all caps will be what they printed in a different color):

Food allergies are on the rise in kids-and now there is more evidence that AVOIDING CULPRITS LIKE PEANUT AT A YOUNG AGE MAY BACKFIRE. In a new study published in The Journal os Allergy and Clinical Immunology children who didn’t eat foods containing peanuts during early childhood were ten times more likely to develop a peanut allergy than kids who ate peanuts before 12 months. Researchers suspect that EXPOSURE TO PEANUTS EARLY ON MAY HELP KIDS BUILD UP A TOLERANCE to them and prevent the allergy form developing. Talk to your pediatrician about when to introduce your child to foods that contain peanuts.

Now obviously if there are allergies within the family this may not apply BUT for the most part I have always believed this was true. What are your thoughts on this and had you heard this yet? Frankly I am happy this is finally getting out there… I’ve always believed this!
D&d’s mom.. well of course this is general and doesn’t go for every kid
excuse typos that were not picked up by spell check…I was feeding Jacob while I typed.
JOhn B is back…. that is why I said if there is family allergies it is a different story duh!
Sry: that first edit I meant to type D&M’s mom not D&Ds’ MOm
parents today are too damn scared by all these studies… even 20 years ago many parents flew by the seat of their pants and what they knew from common sense and their parents. Why else are allergies on the rise now that parents have put off introdcing allergy inducing foods until 2 or almost 3 years old? STUDIES and HYPE

My kid never had peanuts before 12 months and doesn’t have a peanut allergy.

Yes, giving a baby a tiny amount of PB to see if they have a reaction is a good idea. If they don’t, feed them the PB normally. We have become sterile freaks as parents and our kids are paying for it.,
They have also discovered that a little bit of dirt for kids is good! We are fastidious with out children now – “Stay out of that dirt! Get away from that mud! Don’t – you’ll get filthy!”

Turns out, kids need to get dirty a bit to build up their immune systems. Go figure…

I let my 7 month old have a TINY spot of PB and watched him like a hawk. No problem. The next day he had a slightly smaller bit, again, no problem.

    thats interesting, but total BS
    they know nothing about genetics
there is no immune system to allergies
when my son was 10 months, he ate a few peanut crackers, not his first time. his face broke out in hives
my father was also allergic, and genes usually skip a generation
    allergies are 100% genetics

    EDIT
well, it could help, but i very much doubt it
and why would you take the risk of them developing anphylegic shock, and dieng?

  • Clover says:

Yes, I read that too, but my son has peanut allergy’s so we can’t have any in the house.

  • duffy72 says:

I agree with John B to an extent – not all allergy sufferers are going to have a genetic history of it. It’s too risky in my opinion.

  • friends R gifts we give ourself says:

thank you, no i hadn’t heard that but my aunt was feeding her baby strawberries when she was 4 months old and she’s fine today, i actually plan to introduce everything except sugar, before he’s 2 yrs old, with the exception of chocolate and fish, i’m deathly allergic to both so chances are he will be too, other wise i think it’s a good idea to feed him everything, how else will they know if they like it or not.

Allergies are an autoimmune disorder where the body is attacking itself, autoimmune disorders are never a normal finding. There are many reasons for an increase in allergies, one is that by avoiding the allergy inducing food, I agree. All the hype with the sterile environments, purell everywhere, triclosan in all the soaps is also a contributing factor. The main gist of why allergies are growing in epidemic proportion are the overload to an immature immune system with the combo vaccines. I know you don’t feel this is a contributing factor, but I believe that anybody with a child who has any autoimmune disorder should be screened with immunoglobulin levels, which most likely are out of range IgE would be elevated (allergy), others would be depressed (IgE, IgM, IgG), further evidence of damaged immune systems, but it can be treated with IV IgG therapy and probiotics. CBC with differential should be done as well. Why is it that you have to drag your kid to an infectious disease specialist to run common sense non-invasive bloodwork? It’s ridiculous really. How many people answering here know what there kids IgE immunoglobulin level is, or have ever had it checked? Probably just me. Why is it that allergists don’t routinely run IgE levels? Though I have had my son checked status post allergy testing. Why is it that 42 percent of kids have elevated IgE levels? Because they are prone to allergies, but why? Once you have one autoimmune disorder you are prone to illness, infection, and developing other autoimmune disorders. Precautionary measures aren’t followed through and they should be.

John B. anybody can develop anaphylactic shock from anything and die. I developed a severe fruit allergy and had an anaphylactic reaction to a fruit I had eaten for 30 years.

that is why you screen and go to an allergist if you are prone to allergies, have a genetic predisposition or any other autoimmune disorder and you have benadryl, atarax, and an epi-pen if need be.

WOW So glad you posted this!! I seriously almost did. I have a suscription to this magazine and read the artical a few days after I asked a question about my 8 1/2 month old eating PB (on here) and I got a lot of flack from some Moms… and some Moms said it was fine. I waited a week and I just gave it to him again this morning on his toast and he LOVED it! He ate more toast than usual. Obviously I’m keeping an eye on him, but once he shows me that he’s fine with having PB for a second time, I figure we’re in the clear!

Of course it does depend on the family’s allergy situation, ect.. my boyfriend and I have no food allergies (and neither do any of our close family members) so I’ve never been too worried about allergies.

    Thanks again for posting this!!

*** EDIT – I give my son strawberries too (he loves when I make him yogurt and fruit smoothies).. I may get some flack from that too hehe
